Heart and Stroke Mixed Doubles Results
The Dufferin Tennis Club's eighth annual Heart and Stroke Mixed Doubles Marathon was held Sunday, August 22. Six mixed doubles pairs (pictured below) played in the tournament under threatening skies; luckily the rain held off until all five rounds of play were finished. Gwen Chiasson and Jim Stephens came back from a 2-4 deficit to beat Marilyn Yuill and Gerard McMullin 7-4 in the final round of play and claim top spot in the round robin with a total of 35 games. Marilyn and Gerard finished the day in second with 32 games; Karen Blackmore and Zibby Niejedlik finished in third with 24 games, Patti and Andy Sharman in fourth with 18 games, Ursula Feige and Bill Tsuchida in fifth with 15 games and Jill and Jeff Snyder in sixth with 13 games.

A special thank you to Gord and Marilyn Yuill for organizing the tournament and donating lunch. Thank you to all those who participated in the tournament, sponsored players and/or made donations. Proceeds from the tournament totalled $670 this year. To date, the Dufferin Tennis Club has raised over $3013 for the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario through this tournament.
Summer Heat (Chili Open) Singles Results
The Summer Heat (Chili Open) Singles Tournament was completed on Saturday, August 8 after the being interupted by rain two weeks earlier. An entirely new draw was made with 16 players hitting the courts. By mid afternoon the winners were decided. Nick Parpotta blanked Ron Beckett 8-0 in the finals of the main draw and Andrea Hebb edged Zibby Niejadlik 8-7(9-7) in the consolation final.
Thanks to Ron Beckett for doing a great job organizing the tournament and Anca Gaston and the Taylor family for sponsoring lunch and refreshments.
For those who were wondering, the Chili Cook-up and Feast was still held that original tournament day despite the rain in the afternnon. Congratulations to Mrs. Eastmure (Nathan's mom) who won the chili contest! Pictured above is Leo Modi, returning a volley in his semi-final match.
Junebug Doubles Results
The Dufferin Tennis Club held its first tournament of the season Saturday, June 12 under cloudy and very humid conditions. A total of 10 teams were entered into the draw resulting in two round robin groups with the top two teams in each division playing in the finals. In the A final, Nick and Tony Parpotta defeated Ron Beckett and Lee Follis 8-5. Eric Hurlburt and Aldo Pignotta defeated Brendan and Les Ringrose 8-2 in the B final. Thanks to Ron Beckett for organizing the tournament and Debbie Bakker for organizing/ preparing the lunch. Pictured is Karen Blackmore and Rory Stubbs.
Tickets on Sale for Centennial Dinner & Dance
Tickets are on sale for the Centennial Dinner and Dance on Saturday, June 26. The event will be held at the Branch 90 Legion Hall on Oak Street. Cocktails will be served at 6 pm with a hot buffet dinner to follow at 7 pm. "Two of a Kind" will be playing live music from 9 pm to 1 am. Cash bar. Tickets are $30 per person and can be purchased in advance from the court staff.
Centennial Celebrations in June
The Dufferin Club celebrates its centennial anniversary this year. Celebrations include an Open House on Saturday, June 5 from 9:30 am to 4 pm with free food, entertainment and activities for all ages. Raindate is Sunday, June 6 starting at 10 am. Here is a run down of the Open House celebrations:
- 9:30 am Opening Ceremonies
- 10:00 am Town Crier
- 11:30 am (to 1:00 pm) Free Instruction: Learn to Play Tennis & Lawn Bowling
- 12:00 pm (to 2:00 pm) Free Lunch: BBQ with hot dogs, chips and drinks
- 2:00 pm Centennial Cake Cutting/Serving
- 3:00 pm Closing Ceremonies
Play tennis and lawn bowling free all day. Live music played by "The Unitards". Bring your friends and join in on the fun. Get in the spirit and come dressed in period costumes; here are a few examples circa 1913.

Open House - Saturday, May 1
The 2010 centennial season kicks off with a joint Tennis and Lawn Bowling Open House on Saturday, May 1 from 10 am to 2 pm. Information regarding memberships and club activities will be provided and membership and junior tennis camp registrations will be accepted.
Meet our new court staff and Executive members or participate in a free stroke clinic at 12 pm. Non-members are welcome to attend and can play free the entire day. Light refreshments will also available.
Court Access for April
As some of you may have noticed, there is a big wrought iron gate at the back of the club. The gate was installed by Park and Recreation last fall to prevent vandalism to the club, particularly during the off season.
The gate door at the front of the club, by the lawn bowling greens, will be open for access to the Courts 4-6 for those wanting to get out and play before the season opener on Saturday, May 1.
Summer Job for Students
DTC is seeking three individuals to join our Court Staff. Applicants must be full-time high school or post-secondary students between 16 and 30 years of age. Individuals must also be available to work shifts between 9 am and 10 pm seven days a week from Saturday, May 1 to Sunday, October 3, 2010. Knowledge and experience in tennis would be an asset.

Our Town: Brantford
Our Town. the WNED-TV series, came to Brantford in October to produce a scrapbook of the city. One of the segments will be a feature of the Dufferin Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club. Our Town: Brantford premiered Saturday, December 12. The complete story is posted in the Brantford Expositor. WNED has scheduled encore presentations on Sunday, April 4 at 5 pm, April 9 at 3 am and August 29 at 3 pm.
